Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

There are lots of factors that have affected attitudes towards resurfacing, Fetchez la vache.

It was chosen for me because I was quite young for the surgery when I had it (35 years old at the time) so it was felt that I was too young for THR at the time. Since then the 'resurfacing' success rate hasn't been as good as expected. There have been some problems, I think, with inexperienced surgeons doing the surgery, although I must emphasise that my surgeon was brilliant and did an awesome job and completed hundreds of hip revision successfully (sadly for his patients, he's now retired). Also the failure rate (in women particularly) post op was higher that with THRs. I've been very lucky but would definitely go down the route of having a THR if/when required.

I was initially offered resurfacing but a bit of research told me the success rate, particularly for women as @Ness says wasn’t good. My surgeon is a runner ( we were both in Sale Harriers at the time) so he didn’t tell me not run. As you say there’s no data on the wear rate of the hardware in runners so I’d rather risk it and be happy doing what I’m doing!

Exactly, jennywren. In fact, my consultant always said I should keep on running if I wanted to. I sent him photos of me in my 20th 'hip anniversary' celebratory half marathon in 2023 (it also happened to be my 50th half marathon!) I'd rather risk it too and be happy doing what I'm doing.

My surgeon did stick his fingers in his ears and sang lalala when I told him I was doing cross country :-)

Mid march 2024 I had a full hip replacement, right hip. In previous years I have had both the miniscus trimmed for tears in my knees. I played rugby from 11 to 28. I ran track from 10 for 5 years before only playing rugby. Becoming an intermittent runner in my mid 20's . I've run as an over weight old rugby player for some time, occasionally being motivated enough to loose weight and train consistently, at 51 I ran 18.47 for 5k, at 52 an 84.21 half marathon.

Now at 64 I am still rehab'ing from the hip replacement nearly 12 months later, I am loosing weight again and will start an s&c regime to prepare for a run walk programme probably this summer.

I am so happy to finally be in a positive mental state to allow me to start this. Hopefully the future will be more forward movement than backward.

I meant to say 3 years ago I did a spring training camp in Portugal where I was limited in some of the exercises by my hip, so I lost strength and conditioning for more than 3 years before the surgery. So I should not be surprised it takes time to recover. I'm posting now to as a part of my coming back process, part of my creating a positive mental attitude. Hopefully I don't aggravate anyone in indulging myself
