Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch
or for an ad-free Fetcheveryone experience!

Happy, unhappy and just weird things from your schooldays

I seem to remember a similar thing when a touring company came to our school with a production of Macbeth.

Pete D--- was a teacher who increased my confidence in learning foreign languages. We viewed endless Tavor [?] slides with accompanying dialogue but most dreaded it when 'Snarling Pierre', as he was nicknamed, started a lesson with the word, 'Dictée.' :-o

That was my favourite activity! :)

My French teacher had a snobby arrogance about her and wore several layers of make-up. She also insisted on calling everyone by their French-sounding name, so I became Philippe for five years.

Loads of teachers assumed i was "Marc" rather than "Mark". Not just the French one. I never did figure out why.

That's the teachers who didn't call me by my surname anyway!

We all had French names, too, but since there was already a “David” in my class I became Etienne. 🤷‍♂️

We had Latin names in classics, I was Calpurnia. I don't think we did the same in French. Latin lessons stand out in my memory, French class doesn't.
