Part 2 of message (thanks Stu – yes that’s what I had done!)
My max HR is the same as 'Joe' so that saves doing any complicated maths I've been doing my easy runs at sub 145 bpm for about a month now and it's starting to feel a bit easier and quicker, in fact I quite enjoy bimbling along at relaxed pace. Sub LT pace feels a bit more like hard work at the moment!
My next marathon is in April so I shall give this a go over the coming months. If I can improve half as much as some on here I will be well pleased!
Hello el Bee, nice to see you on here

I had a go at a sub lt run last night. Much tougher than I expected. Not that I felt i was absolutely beasting myself but it did feel like an effort even if it was still definitely an 'easy' run (if that isn't too much of a contradiction). Did over 6 miles and while I felt like I could have gone on a bit longer it would have been a struggle to do much more.
It was also slower than I expected so it's pretty clear what two months of reduced mileage does to my aerobic fitness!

Off to try a quick Hadd run. Going by the doc, as my max is 199 starting at 145 bpm would be a good idea, yes?

Good - had already headed out before I saw the answer
It did feel slow and it was: on treadmill, 5.2 km in 30 mins (including VERY cautious pace build up to around 145 bpm in the first km). Average was 142 overall but after the 1 km build up I was at 143-146 the whole time.
Maybe too many other factors to know how typical the result will prove: treadmill in hot gym, crippling marathon on Sunday so legs are in a state, beers last night, junk food today (a true athlete me!), and 7 miles on the Brompton. For example, I've often used a HRM this summer and done runs around 8:20-8:35 for 150 bpm. But I'm probably less fit now.
Anyway, kept it very slow and slowed the machine down to stay under or at 145 until 30 mins was up. At his point I stopped because DOMS-ridden legs started to feel sore AND HR was starting to creep above 145, too, and didn't want to go any slower.
Will try again tomorrow outside.
