I have an app with about 8 semi-customisable data values that I use pretty much all the time, certainly in races. ok, I just checked and it's 7 (wear the watch full time these days). Including the useful 10s-pace which is much more stable than the standard.

I have a Garmin 235, having previously had a 220. I find it an excellent device, which does everything I want. The only drawback is that it won't sync by bluetooth between Garmin and phone. This is because my phone is an Huawei, and is a known problem. My Garmin Connect app advises that there is a 235 software update to overcome the connection problem with Huawei devices, and to download it from Garmin Express. Garmin Express advises that downloads are up to date, so this doesn't work. To get round this problem, I connect the Garmin by USB Cable to my laptop, and connect to Garmin Express. This works ok, but is slower than syncing Garmin to phone. My contract is about to expire, so I am intending to upgrade and buy a different brand, probably a Samsung.

try updating Garmin Express to the latest version. If not then try using the webupdater, or manually download the update and put it in the /REMOTESW directory.

Hillstrider.. I have a Garmin 230 model which is the same as the 235 but without the HRM option. Just a tip re. Samsung.. don't buy one of the 'J' series. I had a J3 which eventually stopped working with Garmin Connect - I simply could not re-add my device whatever I did. In fairness I think it was a Samsung update that caused this which left Garmin scratching their heads to find a fix. The Samsung J3 and J5 are also poor on storage which often means apps can't be updated and you run out of space for photos etc. In the end I found an A1 refurbished Samsung Galaxy S7 for £210 which has plenty of storage and works with Garmin Connect just fine. As a bonus the camera in it is as good as you will get in a mobile phone.

Thanks for your advice Wardi, I'll make a note to ensure that I won't buy a J3 Samsung.

Thanks for the offer Geordiegirl, but I have only had the 235 for a month, so will stick with it. Will be upgrading to a new phone, which I hope will sync effortlessly with Garmin Connect.
