Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

It literally says though that cooking doesn’t kill the bugs in rice!

Just the spores survive cooking though - the spores aren't the bit that cause the upset (I think!)

I find Google very useful for these sort of questions EP.

Fleecy - I am amazed at what you can freeze - was very surprised about fresh pineapple which is as nice after it's been frozen as it is when you first prepare it. Doesn't go mushy or love flavour at all.

LMH - I agree re the pineapple, in fact I think it's better after freezing, seems to improve the flavour.

I freeze cooked rice in portions and then reheat from frozen in the microwave until it's piping hot.

i make meals and serve in to Chinese take away plastic containers and then freeze, for lunchtimes. I regularly re-heat (microwave) dishes containing rice and / or chicken and have managed to live to 56 (so far!). But i do make sure it's all piping hot and i defrost in the fridge first.

Okay, side question. Any tips for getting rid of food smells? I made a rather disastrous curry last night. That would be okay but the house stinks. I've emptied the bins, washed the pans and set the dishwasher off but I can still smell it.

The problem with rice is a heat-stable toxin, so you can microwave it till it’s as hot as the sun but it won’t help IF it’s present (which it usually isn’t in rice cooked at home. It’s mainly restaurants where it sits around all day being repeatedly cooled and reheated).

Sorry McG, you’ll just have to move. That’s the only solution.
