Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Something to aspire to?

telegraph.co.uk

Being an old cynic, I read that and had unbidden visions of cowpats. I reckon some of it, like the kitchen cupboard make-up and the year's rubbish fitted into a tiny jar, is so implausible that it casts doubt on everything. But I was amused by the newspaper using it as an opportunity for an advertisement for stuff that we can buy to make our homes more minimal.

Just as well I've got a black Labrador then ;-)

On a vaguely related topic, it's good to hear that plastic bag consumption has dropped by 70% since the 5p charge was finally brought in in England as well as the rest of the UK. It's been one of my bugbears for years. I used to use the big plastic boxes that supermarkets encouraged some years back (why did they get rid of them?) and now those boxes are useful storage boxes or handy receptacles for taking bottles to the bottle bank etc.

My plastic bag consumption has dropped by 100% since the charge was introduced. In theory it's a trivial amount, but as a principle it has worked.

We've also been able to reclaim a cupboard due to working our way through the plastic bag stash :)

Really, a year's worth of rubbish in a jar. I am not sure I believe it. I agree that we all have too much stuff though.

Our consumption of plastic bags has also dropped by 100%, but I always reused them anyway until they fell apart. I no longer have free bin liners, and have now run out. I'm down to reuseable bags for everything. And I'm wondering why she got rid of her engagement ring?

Clearly her engagement ring was too big to wear every day and therefore to her was not to be kept but does she really have no jewellery and "stuff" and only 1 little black dress? Does she change her entire wardrobe each season and donate it to charity. She clearly doesn't exercise as she wouldn't have the space for the leggings, t shirts etc :-)

Interesting! Possible perhaps, desirable, I'm not sure. Do the boys really have no books, games, craft equipment, trophies, gifts from Grandparents? Mine used to love making things out of bits of wood and stuff they found lurking in the shed or garage. Why would you use vinyl wall stickers instead of art?

Why would you consider vinyl wall stickers to be "green" at all? They're made of, like, vinyl. Someone who uses cocoa powder instead of blusher would have wall art made by sticking macaroni and split peas on with flour-water paste.

I reckon the story was meant to be published on April 1st.

".... This month, each of you must get rid of one thing on the first day. On the second, two things. Three items on the third. So forth, and so on. Anything can go! Clothes, furniture, electronics, tools, decorations, etc. Donate, sell, or trash. Whatever you do, each material possession must be out of your house—and out of your life—by midnight each day."
