Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I think the pattern of 4/5/6 in a league that we have at the moment fits nicely in a month which means for those having a very easy/tough month they don't have to wait long for a change. 2up/2 down would help with that too, particularly for the lower leagues. Maybe less relevant in upper leagues

Agree with earlier comments that would be good to let current version bed in before trying to each month recode it something else

Perhaps if a player is losing mojo could have an option to start again from bottom division (ie similar to when playing WSW).

As ever - just a few thoughts - happy to go with flow

I'm another vote for letting this system bed in for a couple of months before we do any breakaway leagues ;) I mooted 2up 2down in the divisions of 5 earlier - I know it didn't find favour (for obvious reasons) in the upper divisions, but in the lower divisions it will allow people to have variety of opponents, and for the higher rated guys to more quickly shuffle to their level.

I'm not in favour of moving back to a ladder (leagues give a closed period of competition and presents opponents without needing to think too much), and I'm not in favour of reshuffling based on rating after this month (as it basically means the month was meaningless).

As was said earlier, I'm simply enjoying playing some chess, which prior to November I had not done in some 25 years.

^^^ As per JK. Like the leagues rather than a ladder. Also would be happy to have 5 in each division and go 2 up / 2 down. Is it a BIG problem that the ratings are a little mixed up at the moment? It may not be perfect but things will settle over time (cream always rises and all that....) but 2up/2down in a 5 person league will keep most games competitive (fewer dead rubbers) and mix things up on each re-cycle.

I thought a ladder would only work for one game at a time? I'm enjoying having 3 or 4 on the go at same time, because it feels like there's usually a move ready to play. Having said that, I'm feeling really nervy against GM and Dio at the moment. BarefootEm timed out too, hope she's doing OK?

Happy to stay with same format, it's giving me games against people that are good and close and giving me every chance to learn (even if I am not necessarily doing so!!) :-) G

Could we accommodate both ideas and keep everyone happy by having a top division of 8-10 for variety over 2 months (so I don’t keep having James & Brian games all the time), but the lower leagues monthly in the same format as folk seem to like those?
I don’t know how promotion into the big league would work but there should be a way...

If we aren't regrading then no issue with keeping things the same for now.

I guess for me I'm not looking to play more daily games but I'd like to play a wider variety. A bigger league over longer period would mean you could play one game against an opp in a month rather than the two currently.

In a bigger league I'm happy to play the people currently in Div 1 even though I'm likely to lose as there would be learning from it and I think Div 2 and Div 3 would be pretty competitive with each other having played 3 of those in there before the divisions kicked off.

If the consensus is smaller and shorter is better for most then that's fair enough.

X-post Jules. I did have a thought about it that.

If we are doing 2 up 2 down. Then we could have a bigger top league over a longer period where two go down at the end and the previous two winners of Div 2 go up.

That would mean the winner of month 1 in Div 2 would be immune from relegation in month 2 but that's a decent reward for not going up immediately.

And from a standards point of view the top 16 could be pretty competitive in two divisions IMO.
