Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Can someone explain why this game didn’t automatically end, please? I moved black pawn f5 to put the King into checkmate, or so I thought, but the game continued. If the white king took f5 then pawn f6 would have taken it. What am I missing?

En Passant. Because you moved f5 the white pawn on e5 can take your pawn

Thanks Dio. I’ll go and study En Passant - I’ve heard of it but don’t know when it can be used.

If you move your pawn two spaces forward and in doing so bypass an opponent pawn that could've captured you if you'd only moved the one, the pawn can capture sideways.

[I think it ends up on the square you would've been on if you'd only moved one, but I'm getting to the limits of my knowledge. If that latter part is right, then you don't win in 2]

So you mean I might have not lost if I'd known some obscure rule?

I'm so bad at this game :)

I have to add that I'm not the most qualified commentator - this is like Boris Johnson instructing on ethics.

It's worth tapping all your available pieces if you are unsure - if any of them can make a legal move, it will show you.

I was extremely fortunate that TM also didn't know the rule - evenly matched opponents :)
That's a good tip, Fetch.
