Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

Interview with bigleggy

pedroscalls asks: Congratulations on winning MoTM Bigleggy, my question is, if time and money were no object, what route or race would you love to do?

bigleggy says: Thanks Pedro....

If time and money were no object, I would hire a PT, physio, nutritionist etc etc to train me for and be fit enough to run the West Highland Way. Don't get me wrong, I have no desire to run an Ultra, I just like the idea of being fit enough to :-)

Not the most glamorous of locations but Scotland is a beautiful country. My sister used to live up there and I've been to some of the places ( long time ago now). The WHW was brought to my attention by a guy called John Kynaston who used to post the most epic videos of his training for and running the event.

As a close second any race on the South Island in New Zealand so I could visit my sister. With money being no object, I'd fly First Class of course ;-)
Serendippily asks: Hooray. What race do you look back on with most fondness

bigleggy says: That would have to be the Stockport 10 in 2013. I'd been 5:2 dieting for almost the entire year and was the lightest I'd been my entire Adult Life. Training had gone well and I arrived at the start in the best shape ever.

I got compliments on the weight loss before I'd even ran a step so by the time we started I was feeling awesome. I knew it was going well when I reached the highest point of the course and a marshall said 'That's what I like to see, someone enjoying themselves'. I realised I was smiling.

I smashed my 10 mile PB by over 13 minutes. As I crossed the line Bob from Emmerdale gave me a shout over the Tannoy :-)

At the end I got Flapjacks from Sushi :-)

If I could bottle the feeling from one Race, it would be this one. The photo that accompanies these questions is from that day.
jennywren asks: Yes! Will you ever run the Stockport 10 again?

bigleggy says: Hmmmm , I've only just about forgiven you for telling me it was nice and flat ;-) But Yes - I plan to run it every year but life has a habit of getting in the way. Well, that and my total lack of commitment to train for it :-) I wouldn't want to run it untrained. I don't think that would be fair to the organisers who put on a great event.
Pothunter asks: Congrats! What would you have for your death-row meal? Starter, main, dessert and something to wash it down.

bigleggy says: First off , this is a total miscarriage of justice. I didn't do it :-D

Starter - A really nice Tomato Soup with bread - simple I know but done well it's ace

Main - Chicken Jalfrezi with Pilau Rice and Naan - don't get to eat it often but always love it when I do

Dessert - Key Lime Pie Cheesecake - I get OH to make me one for my birthday every year. It is the food of the gods :-)

I'd wash the food down with a few good lagers/IPA (reckon I could do 3 easy) and finish off with a Coffee from the Souk in Qatar (best coffee I ever had) and Sisha.
Diogenes asks: Congratulations. What is your favourite joke?

bigleggy says: Tough one. Not sure I'll be able to give you a decent answer.

I like jokes that are relevant for the time you are in. So recently all the jokes about cabbages lasting longer than the Prime Minister I thought were funny.

My favourite right now is one that has a strain of truth running through it while still being obviously a joke.

Why are the Pyramids in Egypt ?

Because we had no room for them in the British Museum.

Love jokes like that......
Mushroom asks: Congratulations. Is there a sporting event or person that particularly inspired you to put on your trainers and have a go?

bigleggy says: Good question. Being from Liverpool, there was only really one sport growing up and that was football. I played that a lot as a kid. Later on, I took up Ju Jitsu but started running to try and increase my overall fitness. I'm not sure they inspired me as such but I was an impressionable youngster when I watched Coe, Ovett and Cram battle it out on track. I also remember being awestruck by a guy called 'Yifter the Shifter'

I started running more after a motorbike accident ended my ability to play football and partake in Martial Arts. After hobbling around for 6 months I put on some trainers and went for a run. I think the accident was the 'event' that got me running by breaking my foot and several toes :-)
Joopsy asks: When is your autobiography to be released, Ale and parkrun? I am hoping it’s out for my Christmas list this year.

bigleggy says: :-D Ale and Parkrun will be part 3 of the Trilogy. Before we get there we'd have to have Part 1 - The Christian Years (putting the mental into Fundamental Religion) and Part 2 - The Self Destruction Years (Clubbing, drinking and raging against the world) I think I'd have to self publish , no publishing house would believe it :-) The chances of it being ready for Christmas are slim to none if I'm honest Joopsy. I hate to disappoint my audience........... ;-) Actually, I've thought of another book too so Part 4 :-) Part 3 would be 'Losing jobs left right and center while bring up a family - riding the offshoring wave of IT and refusing to quit'
westmoors asks: Congratulations and thank you for the annual entertainment! My question, if you could meet anyone, past or present, who would it be and why?

bigleggy says: Westmoors - you're welcome ;-) Personally, I'd give my right arm to have just 1 hour with my Mum. She died in my mid 20's so never saw me married, never met my kids. I'd love the opportunity to introduce my kids to the Nan they never got to meet.

If you mean someone famous, it would probably be Muhammad Ali. I've just always admired how he stuck to his principles even when it meant he lost his World Titles and earning potential. The easiest thing in the world would have been to capitulate but he stood his ground regardless of the personal cost.
HappyG(rrr) asks: Woohoo, well done. Who makes sure Santa doesn't break a leg? Elf and Safety. No, that's not my question. How about, what's your favourite distance of run and why? Congrats again. :-) G

bigleggy says: This is going to be an odd answer. My favourite distance is 10k but my favourite race is 10 miles (see earlier answer about Stockport) I like 10k as it's about an hour long. That's long enough to suffer if you ask me :-) And if you run it with Sushi she will bring flapjacks and after a brief rest at the finish you feel like eating them rather than just lying there questioning your life choices after a longer distance.
mulbs asks: Well done fella! Just how many of Sushi's flapjacks do you reckon you could eat in one sitting?

bigleggy says: Billions and Billions and Billions and Billions and Billions and Billions and Billions and Billions and Billions and Billions and Billions and Billions and Billions and Billions :-) Seriously , not sure. Everytime I get some I also get strict instructions to share them with the family. So I can never go for it. I did write to the TV channel Dave about commissioning a new show, Man v Flapjack, still waiting for them to get back to me :-)
Night-owl asks: Congratulations. Seeing as you seem to like comedy. Who are your comedy hero's

bigleggy says: Loved Blackadder back in the day and most things with Rick Mayall in. (Kevin Turvey anyone ?? ) Going back a bit further Les Dawson always made me laugh, hence the homage to the man every year in the December jokes. But this year's jokes were in all honesty the clean non-offensive jokes from Gary Delaney's act mostly.
RRR-CAZ 🇬🇧 asks: Congratulations- If you were to be offered Golden tickets to any sports event what would you choose to watch?

bigleggy says: Tough one........I assume you don't mean where I get to choose the participants etc. It would have to be either a World Cup final or the Grand Prix in Spa, Belgium
Ness asks: Congratulations, bigleggy, My question is where is your favourite place to run, and where would you most like to go for a run but haven't been yet?

bigleggy says: Well , the vast majority of my runs are in the local park, Croxteth Park. It's 8 square mile of park, trail and woodland in the heart of suburban Liverpool. Over the years I've ran just about every part it's possible to. Parkrun is also held there and I've done 146 of them in the same park so I guess that's my fave place to run. I wouldn't keep going back otherwise :-) I went to New York last summer and faked a photo of me running in Central Park (I ran less than 20 metres). I'd like to go back and run around there properly.
Nadders (aka monsenb1) asks: What's the best-tasting beer you've had after a race?

bigleggy says: To be honest I've never really drank after a race. Usually because I've driven a car to get there. However, when I have, after any race the first beer usually doesn't touch the sides, so the answer would always be 'the second one' :-)
Sushi asks: Is the Stockport 10 mile flat and how much of my flapjack can you get through in one sitting?

bigleggy says: So, having spoke to Sushi it would appear that these questions have already been asked (or answered). So she asked me to answer a different question(s)

If I could create my own flavour of flapjack , what would it be and why ?

Tough Question because anything I make would be a poor imitation of the real deal which is your flapjacks. I've tried making Strawberry Jam ones in the past and the result were...........varied. You can't beat perfection ;-)

My own flavour would be any flavour of flapjacks you care to make because they are delicious and my drug of choice :-) (But I do like raspberry jam and damson jam ;-) )

Do I listen to music while running and is Hayzee Fantayzee on my playlist ?

Yes I do. Especially now I can load my spotify playlist onto my Garmin so I don't have to carry a phone or mp3 player. Hayzee Fantayzee is on my playlist which is over 20 hours long so I don't listen to it too often.

Would I like some flapjacks ? YES - preferably a weekly supply that I don't have to share with anyone :-)
