Gobi - Why not visit the first timers thread? Everyone has to do a first one and you never know, some might even be ready to step up to that distance, even by your own high standards.

Andy - because most are not ready so I don't feel I can add value.
I wasn't ready when I did my first one and took 8 years before I ran my 2nd (a 40 mile race), I was better prepared the 2nd time but on reflection still not really ready.

I have "ran" marathons for the social side and done them to get a time. Sometimes it goes well, sometimes it's okay and then there are the get to the finish line in one piece. I have never regretted any of them.
Each person has their own reasons to complete a marathons, just because it's not the same reason as you it's no reason to devalue someone else's efforts.

If that is aimed at me UC then you misunderstand my posts. Nobody has devalued any efforts, I have tried to encourage people to wait longer before doing the race in the first place.
I have also run social marathons and unlike you there are races I should NOT have done.

Not aimed at anyone.
I agree some folks rush to do a marathon before they are ready.
Just sometimes you have to learn from experience and I learnt alot about myself struggling to finish a few marathons.

I agree UC - I said "for me" as in "athletic endeavour etc"
I actually think it is much harder if people want to take 5-6hrs over a mara distance, and I don't devalue anyone's efforts in that respect.
It's just not an approach that I personally would want to take, but it's a free world and if folk want to complete a mara for any reason, athletic or social then fair play to them.

I doubt if anyone, apart from the very top level, are truly ready for the first marathon. The marathon tests you like no shorter distance does and it finds any chink in your armour and exposes it.
I am by no means an expert and after 11 am still learning.....two of those I shouldnt have run, but I did. I dont regret either as I still learnt from them. Only once did I DNS and that was a sensible decision at the time, although part of me does regret missing that race.
Every marathon has been a worthwhile experience, the first was in many ways quite magical for me - sad I know - and its something I think more people should experience......but as long as they take the time to prepare !

I will be running my 50th mara on Sunday and have loved every one of them, sure some have gone better than others that's inevitable but when I cross that finish line it fills me with euphoria. I don't belong to a club and train myself, people will run a mara when they feel they are ready whether they actually are or not. You can be ready as poss and it can all go tits up.
