Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Been reading this thread with interest.

Anyone feel like taking a look at my training so far and tell me if I should truly be praying for a rejection magazine for VLM. I am tough I can take it.

I have a HM on October 28th that I am aiming for sub 2.30 in.

Bex66, the guys that organise the 100 have tightened the entry significantly, which to be fair, is a shame, as I'd expect people to be responsible and not need a nanny state!

FR - safe to say race organisers need to be more stringent or just put in a few cut offs :¬)

FR - with races in the hills and fells, or taking you to exposed areas of the country, the onus is shifting towards the RO to start taking "adequate" provision to make their races as safe as possible. Of course, this is subjective depending on the race.

I am aware of a lot of the discussions and arguments that surround the FRA-registered races (the forum is full of discussions and disagreements), but we have to accept that unfortunately people inevitably overestimate their own abilities (and I am definitely *not* saying that this is the case of the OP or subsequent people who've posted on here). An example of this is a runner who ran our club fell race last saturday (and we think it's actually a pretty good introductory fell race for newbies), who came back saying he'd run half marathons etc and that our 7mile race was the hardest thing he'd ever run.

This poses significant risk, especially in some off-road races - where if you twist/break your ankle on the top of a moor (even in the summer), it can take some time for assistance to arrive and even longer for MT or the Air Ambulance (which has been needed on fell races) to get to you. The threat of hypothermia and exposure is real.

Thus, although the RO can legislate by taking what you would call sensible precautions - marshals, regular CPs, cut-offs etc. The requirement of entry conditions for such races is merely a sensible extension of these precautions. If an inexperienced runner gets into trouble and the worst does subsequently happen and someone dies, in this day and age of litigation, the RO can legitimately state precautions were taken and the runner was warned that experience was necessary.

Gobi and rf_fozzy, the cutoff at Buttermere is tough and next year will be my #1 aim :-)

Maybe we should start a thread for us marathon virgins planning to break our duck (apologies for the mixed metaphors) next Spring so we can motivate each other through those long Winter mornings/nights of training? And hopefully the experienced guys would pop in as well and give us some guidance :-)

Really interesting thread and views. My own expereince was that after 4 years of10ks I ran a half with the intention of stepping up to marathon. That half nearly broke me and it was 3 years before I ran a half again with my first marathon 3 months after the 2nd half. The 2nd half was slightly quicker than the first but didnt take as much out of me. I was running more miles but less than 35 mpw. The marathon itself went well until 20miles and was tough thereafter.....but I had done it and found my distance. In the 6 years since I have learnt so much more about what to do and what not to do. I know I ran that first one underprepared, but 12 months later posted a significant improvement with a better approach to training.

FWIW I think that its more than possible for the OP to do as planned as long as the goal is to get round and no more. Gobi's advice I think is more appropriate if the aim is to race and post a time that matches your capabilty. In an ideal world we would all do as Gobi suggests, is the best and right way to do things. But we are an impatient lot.

However, care must be taken to build up gradually and to learn how to run and fuel long distances. I had a few nasty experiences in my build up to the first marathon. My first ever 20miler for example I completely ran out of fuel and experienced something I dont ever intend to experience again.
