Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Youve just done your first Half, you have six months until your first Full. How to approach it?

Who wants to volunteer to be part of a trial?

Group A do little training and start marathon running a short period after completing a half marathon (or shorter event) *I kid you not that an anecdotal tale is that one competitor (!) in this year's Lakeland 100 had the longest race of 10k to their running CV.

Group B build up over time (couple of years) to 50 miles per week.

Just a thought?

I was a 'group A' when I did my first marathon! :-)

It was 5 years later before I was running 50 miles per week, and there were a few more marathons in those 5 years!

Looking back a few pages and have skipped some of this thread. I think it is totally possible to over think this step up. I ran a half stopped running toally then when I actually trainer for my first 'proper' half ran 1.29 and I gave it everything - 5 months later I ran 3.01 for a marathon (around 35-38 miles a week). I think it is possible to be conservative to a determental degree. Buiilding up solid chunks of threshold running alongside developing your long run I think it is perfectly possible to run a good marathon not long after your first half.

FR: That tale of the Lakeland 100 doesn't surprise me, but it depends what other activity they do. I'm aware of someone who ran a decent marathon on next to no specific running training, but was an aspirant guide so had such epic overall fitness it was ridiculous. I can imagine those with such a background may be even more suited to going into an event like the Lakeland 100 without having ever raced or run much before.

Anecdotally the guy made it to Wasdale Head, 19.4 miles.

And lets not forget that Dean Karnazes just went out and ran 30 miles in one night when he first got back into running because he had a good level of overall fitness anyway .

Surprised the Lakeland 100 even let someone enter on the back of just a 10K though -seems pretty irresponsible - you certainly wouldn't get into the Western States 100 on that . And they check your stats at every checkpoint - some pretty cool vids on Western States and Leadville on Youtube for anyone who is interested
