Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

When people look at weather apps and then make an assumption on what it's telling them, but fail to read the screens properly e.g. they'll see a rain symbol from 2pm to 8pm and proclaim that it's "going to be pouring down all afternoon".

But if they look at the percentage sign under the symbol they'll see that it's actually saying "there's a 17% chance it'll be raining at 2pm, a 23% chance it'll be raining at 3pm", etc, so statistically it's actually unlikely to be raining between 2 and 8pm

Doesn't '17%' mean that in 17% of the area in question it will be raining? (rather than a 17% chance of rain occurring).

Your point still stands however.

Isn't that the same thing?

If it's raining in 17% of the area, then there's a 17% chance I'll be in the rain.

I've always understood it as meaning that if there's a 17% chance of rain in Toytown, then there's a 17% chance of rain throughout the whole of the greater Toytown metropolis, and therefore there's a 17% chance that all of Toytown will get wet.

I've never read it as 17% of Toytown will experience rain but 83% of Toytown will stay dry.

I read somewhere that for the bbc app it is the percentage chance of there being some rain at that place in the hour running up to the time given.

Hmm - this is from the bbc site:

What does % chance of precipitation (rain, snow, hail, etc) mean?

Our data supplier MeteoGroup uses the probability of precipitation (% chance), and this ranges from 0% (no chance at all) to 100% (it will be wet).

So what does a 20% chance of rain actually mean? It means that out of 100 situations with similar weather, it should rain on 20 of those, and not rain on 80. In a nutshell, it means that, whilst you may get some rain, it's much more likely (but not certain) to stay dry.

The probabilities are given for the location chosen, and thus are valid for that location only. As MeteoGroup forecasts take advantage of hourly updates, which include real-time information from radar, satellite, and nearby weather station observations, you may notice the probabilities changing in the short-term (next 2-3 hours).

This gives you the chance to spot when, for example, a shower may be approaching your location, as the probabilities will tend to rise.

Note that when the chance of precipitation is less than 5% it will appear grey on the website. Above 5% it will be blue.

What I said earlier applies to the met office app (I guess I read it before the beeb dumped the met office). From the met office site:

Chance of precipitation
For example, a 70% chance of rain represents a 7 in 10 chance that precipitation will fall at some point during that period.

Chance of precipitation represents how likely it is that rain (or other precipitation: sleet, snow, hail, drizzle etc.) will fall from the sky over a certain time period.

Fragile Do Not Bend
I’m irrationally irritated by the Royal Parks Half logo. If I was racing it, I’d be very tempted to get some tippex and fill in the rest of the word.

FDNB - Bath would interchangeably use BATHHALF and BATHALF on various logos. In the latter, the H was broken into a left piece and a right piece, like the words had formed some sort of chemical bond. I found myself saying BAT HALF or BATH ALF :-)
