Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Complicated basin stoppers, especially in hotel bathrooms, that fail in their sole simple job of keeping water in the basin.

A rubbery bung thing on a chain works. How exactly has your pop-up chrome and plastic contraption improved matters?

We stayed in a pub for a night in Loddon which had a leaky sink plug and reported it to the staff.
We returned twelve months later and asked for the same room as (other than the plug) it was very nice.
The plug was still leaking, only faster this time! We reported it again but won’t have need to return as the people we were visiting have moved away.

Complicated basin stoppers are utterly trounced by schoolkids and a wad of paper towels.

Hotels that have fancy greenwashing notices about thinking how much water we’ll save if you don’t change your towels every day. Change your popup wastes to a rubber bung and save twice as much and pay 90% less for a functioning piece of kit!

Oh my god yes. This seems quite prevalent amongst younger folk - I see it in my gaming chat groups and some of my colleagues. Nothing irritates me more than someone sending me a query over Teams with an initial message of "hi", then "sorry", then a 5 minute gap before their actual question.

Myself, when I read in a recipe "Preparation time: 30 minutes" and I believe it.

[usually when recipes say preparation time 30 minutes, they should say cooking time 30 minutes (i.e. after you’ve peeled, chopped, grated, washed or whatever all the ingredients)]

this one was 'preparation time 30 mins, cooking 4 hours'. I think they mean, 30 minutes from when you have a spotless kitchen with all the ingredients and utensils lined up ready to use, and there are no small children in the house to help or distract. (those two verbs having the children and myself as their implied objects).
