Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I think they’re of use as it allows you to divert in good time onto primary roads. Eg A21 which goes London to Hastings, if coming from Devon you know in time to take an alternative route eg the A35 / A31 along the south coast rather than A303 / M25 / A21

Yes but how many people take that journey? Its more useful to know how other roads are doing. What is the A303 like or the M5?

A lot of the time the roads are obscure and I don't even know where they are (and I'm pretty good at road geography)

Or you need to be a road nerd. eg seen on the M3 recently 'A303 closed after A345'.

Who, other than people who live on it, know where the A345 is?
(and I live near Salisbury)
Why not 'A303 closed in 35 miles' or 'A303 closed at Amesbury'.

Sigh
We get that quite a bit, too. Driving South on the M6 near Stafford, it'll say something like "A5 closed west after junction with M42" or "A5 closed east after A41" and my mind has instantly left the local traffic while I work out where that is and if it'll affect me.

M25 2 hour delay J29-31. Now what junction number do I come off again? Does this matter? (I was pretty sure it didn't, correctly as it turned out. Very bad at remembering junction numbers. Think the American system where the number is just the distance in miles from the start of the highway has a lot going for it)

The M5 will tell you that the A40 is closed but not tell you if the closure is east of the M5 or west. Why withhold that key bit of information?

Too late now Dio, but from Wilton, you should have headed straight(ish) to the M27, via Downton and the NF ... avoid Salisbury on a Friday at all costs. One of the biggest place to not have a ring road, there's queues in all directions in and out of it.
Or you could have popped in for a drink or a run (at A36/A27 junction)
