Until a few years ago I was a 'single lane' queuer and would happily sit and block the outer lane for those that tried to jump the queue. But driving has changed, and nearly all the "2 lane to one" sections seem to advise 'queue and merge in turn', so I'm now in the 'use both lanes' camp. (a) because that's what the signs tell you to do and (b) because if I don't 100's of others will and selfishly (c) it's normally quicker ]

Two half mile queues can be cleared more quickly than one mile long one, especially if everyone merges at the furthest point. In theory, one shouldn’t need to stop at all, just reduce speed until the lines close like a zip.]
