Its been drilled into me so much to clear my plate that I sometimes end up making myself ill through eating too much when housemate serves up a giant portion. Is this a generational thing, a modern thing, or just something weird?

The (supposedly) well-to-do would be instructed not to clear their plates as it suggested they were poor and didn’t get enough to eat at home. Also, I believe that young women (probably at finishing school) were told is was unladylike to eat to much, especially in the times when corsets and wasp-waists were in fashion.
