[Oh Mrs Jigs
My SiL told me today that her neighbour's CCTV had picked up a couple of scrotes going down their road trying all the car door handles. As one of them clearly had a terrible cough she recommends everyone wipe their car door handles before opening them. ]

Just got an online bill from E.On - the firm who insisted on us having a smart meter so we wouldn't have to have to submit meter readings for the seaside house anymore and the firm who assured me, when we were last at the seaside house and found that the 'consumer info monitor' was no longer working, less than 2 months from its installation, that the actual meter was working properly - *that* E.On.
The bill is wildly over estimated and the revised direct debit they propose is about three times the usual DD. I can't submit a corrected meter reading because, obvs, we can't get down there and I can't talk to anyone because they've effectively closed their customer service helpline 'to deal with emergencies' for the foreseeable future.
I know in the great scheme of things this is minor, but was it too much to expect the smart meter to have done what it was supposed to, or for E.On to have asked me for a meter reading when I reported the fault. Obviously it was.

[I didn’t realise that you could be made to have a smart meter. We just ignore all of the letters we receive from SEE offering to fit one “at our convenience”]

[You're right ER - we've resisted one. But some suppliers, not sure if EOn is one, may have rates that you only get access to if you have a smart (or dumb) one installed]

[E.On claimed that I had ticked the 'yes please' box to have a smart meter installed when we switched to them last year, ER. As it was done online, I could not prove I'd said 'No thanks' although I think I did.
As it's for the seaside house I foolishly thought it might be more convenient to do away with having to submit meter readings, given that we aren't necessarily there when it's time for the readings, so I grudgingly accepted.
How naive I was. ]

[You could just stop the DD with your bank. EOn will talk to you about it fairly quickly, and you won't even have to make the call to them....]

[If you do get a smart meter make sure you insist it is a "SMETS-2" meter otherwise if you change suppliers your new supplier may not be able to get readings remotely and you're back to manual readings. Hint: the big 6 energy suppliers have a large backlog of SMETS-1 meters they're trying to force on to unwitting punters...]
