This time, however, they’ve already issued a replacement without telling me and sent it to my UK address so can’t unblock the original that I have with me. This will make booking hotels for our return drive home, and paying motorway tolls, complicated to say the least. They’ve just lost a customer.

I've found BC (and Amex) very good when you give the problem to them to fix. aka 'force them' to fix it rather than you suffer.]
