Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

[I also can't see a pop-up. Don't tell the advertiser.]

[weirdly I had blank popups for an hour or two but they are long gone. I’m an FE! (Important red exclamation mark) though]

(Following the first after sunset drive this year). Why does everybody sit in traffic queues with their brake lights on? Have they forgotten they have handbrakes, or can they just not be arsed to use them? Only noticed two other drivers making the very small effort not to dazzle the people behind.

[NDWDave, do you mean that automatic transmission cars would have their brake lights on or wouldn’t? Sitting in long queues of traffic it was obvious that almost all had brake lights on, and I don’t think there are that many automatics around, are there? Perhaps I just think that because I don’t like them much.]

My car is an auto and also has the stop-start feature to cut the engine and reduce emissions / fuel usage in traffic. The stop-start works when it's in Drive with the foot brake applied, hence the brake light showing.

Of course I could put it in neutral, apply the hand brake and turn off the engine to achieve the same outcome without showing a brake light, but that would become tedious in stop-start traffic.

[I suppose a stationary car with brake lights on might be slightly more likely to be automatic as you can’t hold a car still by balancing the clutch. But I suspect the majority of people either use the footbrake or handbrake when stationary so the type of transmission wouldn’t make any difference]

[Cross posted with Fitz, I didn’t know about the stop-start thing as the automatic I had didn’t have that]
