Personalised number plates are offset by the benefit that mugs who want a fancy number plate pay the DVLA lots of money which funds things like the NHS (at least for new ones)

I have no truck with personalised number plates (I just think they're naff). I'm talking about the ones where the actual sequence of numbers and letters has been manipulated to look like something else to the casual observer. Which not only look stupid and annoying, but presumably cause all kinds of problems in the event of an accident or crime.

I expect that the majority of cyclists own a car and pay road tax anyway.

Ok “vehicle tax” required for keeping or using your vehicle (but not a bicycle) on the road. 🙃

Vehicle excise duty (which you don't have to pay for certain cars anyway) simply goes to the exchequer to help pay for schools, hospitals and nuclear submarines. Roads are paid for by council tax and whatever other sources of income local councils get, apart from trunk roads which are centrally funded.

I know nobody pays road tax, that's why it winds me up so much when people moan about it
although also- idiot cyclists that do stupid things that reinforce the bad stereotype so many people have of them

People that, if they see a cyclist doing something idiotic, then assume all cyclists display the same idiotic behaviour (like light jumping or riding on the footpath). If you see a driver behaving like an utter dickwad, you don't assume ALL drivers do that, do you?

Timing chip problems. Yesterday's marathon only picked me up in the last couple of miles and I've been given a worse off [gun] time by some 24 minutes. Filled in the result queries form to try and get it corrected. Race over, I would rather be sitting back to reflect on the day instead of form-filling.
