Fragile Do Not Bend
Supermarket shopping, when every time you want something from a shelf the same pair of dozy twonks are standing in the way.

It took me a minute to realise that WS wasn't talking about ants having addiction problems. I was wondering what fresh hell environmental pollution was inflicting on the animal kingdom now!

[lol Carp! I quite like Ant and Dec and altho I can not condone his actions at all- I've seen the aftermath of catastrophic injury too often- his high profile and likeability might bring the issue of addiction into the open. Previous high profile addicts have had that "they're different from me so it can't be the same" persona- I'm thinking Amy Winehouse, Gazza etc. But Ant is your best mate, the lad next door. You've grown up with him and yet you didn't notice what was happening. I hope he recovers and that in some way it helps others to seek help. Sorry, long post. I'll get off my soapbox now]

[I think for me it's that he hasn't admitted he has an addiction until he was caught drink driving. It smacks of "poor me, it's not my fault". The drinking problem might not be, but being alcoholic doesn't make you get behind the wheel while you could be over the limit. Being an asshole does.]

[I hadn't thought of it like that. I know he's admitted addiction to prescription drugs but not alcohol. And I'm not sure that it's "poor me". An asshole yes, and arrogant - I'm OK, I can do this, it's everyone else who cocks up. It won't happen to me, and I'm not going that far, I've done it before, I'll be fine. But isn't that what addiction is? Or rather, denial of addiction. Still, I hope it ends well]

[I think addiction does do that, but people still know that driving impaired is stupid. But like you, I hope it ends well.]

[Being drunk leads to poor decision making, poor risk assessment, and an inability to make an accurate assessment of one's own physical state. It is not separate from the condition, it is part of it.]

[ Carp, he admitted an addiction problem last summer involving prescription drugs and alcohol, and checked into rehab at the time. So probably fairer to say he's tried to resolve his problems once before and failed/lapsed since. It doesn't stop him being an arsehole for drink driving but pretty much every successful sober alcoholic I know has had to try a few times before they find their way forward. ]

Indeed. If the same crime were commited by a druggie from a shit estate he would deemed evil by all and sundry.
You know or people around you know you do not drink and drive. Hundreds and thousands of people avoid it beforehand every day of the week. If you arrange a cab before you get pissed it doesn't happen. It is not as if he cannot afford taxis.
WA. Arrogant. Spot on.

[I didn't know he went to treatment last year - ought to read the papers more often! I don't think for one minute that kicking addiction is easy or very often done on the first try. I just think getting behind a wheel is really awful.]
