My mother said that scores of children were falling down between the handlebars and getting asphyxiated fatally to death. My friend Kathleen got a Shopper and thought she was the bee's knees. I had to make do with a two-wheeled Tri-Ang scooter until I got my cousin's hand-me-down bike when I was eight.

[Until quite recently I never got on with cycling. If I took a hand off the handle bar to try to signal everything went all wobbly . Just off the grip, not waggling it around, literally as soon as I loosened my grip to lift a hand ... wobble. And I considered riding hands free to be an unearthly dark science . Then I became very ill and became able to take my hands off of the handle bar without a sudden 90 degree reorientation ]
