What is the reason behind 'coming out'

Trin Feb 2020 7:27pm, 7 Feb 2020 1,723 posts	Quote Pin Trin So Schofield came out as gay today, which is great that he doesn't have to pretend to be someone he's not anymore, but what I don't understand is why it is news in 2020? Could he not have just told those people close to him, those who really matter to him? Am I missing something? When people come out as gay, is it important to make it a big announcement to the world? I'm not judging or criticising, just trying to understand why it's such big news.

The more people who are not afraid to speak up makes such matters less uncommon and so hopefully reduce the hatred/antipathy towards such groups. The fact that he is a celebrity means that more people are aware and that perhaps helps towards that reduction.
