Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Any Yorkshire-based runners doing Kettlewell tomorrow? It's a cracking little race and I am going to try and make it. Last year I stood and watched as everyone disappeared up the fell, barely able to walk properly due to what was then undiagnosed arthritis. I hope to do a bit better this year :-)

I’d love to say yes but it’s highly unlikely I’ll be there. It is a cracking do though

So maybe I'll be able to keep up with her for a couple of miles in the UT55 next weekend. But probably not!

Arrochar Alps for me today, fantastic day out, hot and cloudless. 40 min PB and lovely soak in the river afterwards :)

Anyone else been racing?

Posting this for Stu Little who asked if I could describe the "loop" off Great End.

For the Cumbrian Traverse or Joss Naylor Challenge, the conventional wisdom is to take "The Band" descent off Great End down to Styhead, however this is far from easy and looking at the timing splits from people who have done it, it's easy to deduce that it doesn't buy you much unless a) you are a very good, fearless descender and b) conditions are good and the rock is dry. Apparently Joss himself is of the opinion that the "loop" is the better way to do it. Flying Finn used this route on his recent (fast) JNC, I recall getting from the Great End summit to the Styhead stretcher box in 23 minutes - and the impact on his legs will have been less than if he'd gone via The Band.

It's very straightforward. Assuming you're at the southern summit, head off at about 200 degrees on what would be the "normal" BGR line, then drop down to the old shelter lower down on the col. Pick up the main Scafell Pike highway and head east, but before you reach Esk Hause shelter go off-piste to the NE, shaving the corner of the regular path that would take you down pas Sprinkling Tarn. Don't shave it too much or you end up among some naughty little crags, it's an easy grassy descent for the most part, eventually you rejoin the main path. There's a little gill up there that provides good clean water, not marked on this map but it's there alright.
