Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

Running with a broken hand

Tripped over my feet at running club last night and broke my little finger (not the usual place apparently, but where it joins the hand). Currently splinted up with two of my fingers curled at a right angle.

Anyone broken their hand and managed to run OK. Meant to be doing a 13 mile marathon training run tomorrow. Didn't know whether to try slinging it to stop movement (thought it might affect my stride pattern though) or to just try running with it loose (and take money for a taxi for if/when I get fed up with it). Or give up completely and go hiking instead.

Any ideas?

I haven't run with a broken hand, but if this only happened last night why don't you give your body a rest and let it concentrate on healing this and dealing with this shock before giving it a pounding by the impact caused by running 13 miles.

only my thoughts though, and other folk might have different views!

I've broken my pinkie similarly and kept on rowing :-) Might throb a bit but I don't see how running can affect it, unless you fall again.

I certainly wouldn't sling it, the strain of an odd running gait for 13 miles might be problematic.

Thanks for the advice so far :)

Normally I would just rest, but meant to be helping a buddy with his first marathon training. I know I can get round (painfully) on less than ideal training, but it's his first so I'm trying to make all the long runs.

I've run with a fractured carpal bone in a cast up to the elbow with no problems, but I wouldn't think that running a HM just 2 days after the injury would be a good idea, since I suspect that the increased blood flow would exacerbate the swelling and delay recovery a bit.

I ran Coventry half in 2006 with a cast on for a fractured scaphoid.

Ive didn't stop cycling when i broke my hand, but I didn't run in those days anyway. I'd be a little wary of doing anything to aggravate it for a day or two...
