Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

For anyone interested, this comment from a previous skipper of the “Bayesian” is likely to be highly relevant:

“The Angle of Vanishing Stability is the angle of heel at which the vessel righting moment reaches zero, meaning that the vessel will not return to upright. Again, I forget the actual numbers for this, but the figures would be around 90 degrees with the moveable keel lowered and 75 degrees with it raised.

The Downflooding Angle is much more important though in the scenario we are talking about. This is the angle of heel at which water will start to enter the vessel (usually through engine room or accommodation ventilation ducts)… once this starts the vessels is in serious trouble as stability is quickly reduced or lost due to the flooding.

The downflooding angle for Bayesian was around 40-45 degrees… much less than the AVS. So, unless the vent dampers are closed (which with HVAC systems and generator running they would NOT be as they need to be open for that), the vessel will start to flood rapidly if heeled more than the downflooding angle.”

A design catering more to looking flashy than being safe, certainly. That, along with an unusual weather event. Could it be a deliberate act? Maybe but it seems far more likely that it's just a tragic accident.

And the partner who was hit while out running seems like a coincidence. Happens all the time unfortunately.

Plenty of details to be revealed from the investigation of course but my takes are:

- Startling to me that the downflooding angle is so low (compared to the relative 15m-20m tiddlers that I sail, with downflooding angles far closer to their AVS). What has hitherto seemed “safe” may be reassessed. Or it maybe concluded that the numbers still stack up in the face of the remote probability of a repeat event.

- If/once she was hit by a downburst/super squall, she rolled to 45°, started flooding and was pinned there, she would just have kept going…

- Design not capable of surviving the exceptional event. Far from unique design or event. Wrong place/time.

The “conspiracy” that will exercise me, if it so emerges, could be “Big Sail” vs “little crew”.

Do you mean yacht designers/builders claiming it wasn’t the design at fault and the crew are to blame? I’d bet on that happening.

That's not exclusive to the sailing world unfortunately. There's a fine tradition of big business blaming the little man (or woman) when they f*&k up.

Right. Here's a real one, by which I mean it's a conspiracy theory being shared in some sectors of the population, not that it's an actual conspiracy that's happening.

COVID and the vaccines were there to reduce the population, and it's working. Even people who had the vaccine and haven't died (yet) have been somehow changed by it. You can see it in their eyes apparently.

So there's a load of dead usually older people so there's a glut of homes coming on to the market, so house prices should be dropping but they're not. You know why?

Because They (and it's not clear who They are but I'm betting there's a Star of David involved if I could be arsed to dig a bit deeper) are buying up all the empty houses to accommodate all the people coming over in Them Boats, innit.

It's the Great Replacement. WAKE UP SHEEPLE!
