I couldn’t find a recent thread on this so...

I have resumed running in lockdown after a looong break. I’m currently using ancient road shoes but running off road mostly. My dog walking trainers are dying, as are my walking boots - dog walks also all off road. I thought if I could find a pair of trail running shoes they could double as dog walking footwear at least until shops open.

Obviously I can’t go try stuff on and it will ultimately come down to fit but any suggestions welcome to narrow my online search.

Inov8

But more seriously. How grippy/how luggy do you want them to be?

(and what price range)

What are your road shoes? Are they comfy?
I tend to stick to the same brands for road and trail. Saucony mostly but Brooks also suit my feet. I will say that trail shoes are a lot more forgiving than road shoes. I have Innov8s but they niggle the crap out of my Achilles as they are so low drop

Hmm! I don’t know. The current routes are mostly hard packed trails but some sections get really muddy if it’s been raining a lot. Once I’m allowed to go further afield they might get used for walking in the hills so mixed terrain (mud, track, loose gravel). Probably nothing too hardcore though.

I just bought really ugly Saucony peregrines from sportshoes.com for about £40. If you go for old models of hideous colourways you can get some bargains on there. I wear trail shoes for walking too, hate walking boots

So if you want something cheap, with good grip, these have found some favour in the fell running community:

moremile.co.uk

They are supposed to be heavier than Inov8s and similar, but they are dirt cheap. I intend to try them when I need a new O shoe (because orienteering destroys shoes).

It's worth working out what features you want (e.g. waterproof - not something that I'd want, but some folk seem to like goretex for some reason) and then working from there.

Price point is definitely worth considering too. But there are quite a few sales on atm.

Have a look on Pete Bland, Sportsshoes.com - see if there are any bargains.

Avoid waterproof. Water will inevitably get in and it then can’t get out

Some background reading ... fetcheveryone.com/forum/question-trail-races-and-trail-shoes-61451/1

I like inov-8s, and find the low drop helps my achilles!

But Dr F's advice is good - if you've got road shoes you like, go for the same make?
Couple of decisions - waterproff or not, mud/rock or not - but sounds like you're looking at general all rounders? (eg mud claws are fantastic for mud, but like skates on wet rock/chalk)

Inov-8 ans Sportsshoes seem to have some bargains at the moment, expecially if you have small or large feet.

Disagree with DT ... love waterproof for boggy New Forest and wet long grass.
But he is right - if water is deep enought to go in, it stays in.

Thanks everyone. There are so many bloody options. I have mizuno road shoes so have looked at Mizuno trail shoes on sportshoes. 14 bloody options. I'm in danger of picking by colour.
