Had a prime example of that today- my swim was stressful and exhausting, due to others. I had all sorts- wake from aqua aerobics, a lane mate with an already very wide stroke who then started using paddles, but the one that made me most angry was the lady who stood chatting at the end of the lane (which was busy with 4/5 other swimmers having to negotiate each other plus her at the turn) and then just as I was touching and turning set off slowly in front of me. 5 more seconds and she could have set off behind me. I actually stood up and said “you have to be kidding”. She paused, I thought to let me past, but no it was just to say one last thing to her friend, then set off in my way again. |

Metro Nome - that is so common in pools. I’ve gone up to do a turn in the middle of a long swim and 2 people have set off just as I’m touching the side. No pool etiquette. These days I still turn and then overtake them (assuming no-one’s coming the other way).

Yes that’s what I do. On this occasion somebody was coming the other way so waited til they were passed then overtook with excessive kicking and splashing to make my point 😂

We have double-width lanes, but that often means - as happened this morning - you can be overtaking a slower swimmer and then towards the end of their lap they start pulling across to the middle to make their turn and end up squishing you into the person who's just pushed off in the other direction. And then they don't acknowledge you were there and going faster than them, and definitely don't expect them to even consider checking at the end of their length if there's someone faster they might let go ahead. And we too have the chatters who block the lane ends, the people who like to walk while it's shallow enough, and the people moving so slowly through the water they don't even generate bubbles to tell you you're catching them. All this is in the so-called 'fast' lane (suggested pace: 2min/100m). So basically I want a pool to myself and if I ever win huge sums on the lottery I will build one! 😀 |

I nearly crashed into a guy the other week who was swimming in the fast lane but couldn’t manage the whole 20m so started floundering then had to stop and stand up. Power to him for giving it a go, just, maybe not in the fast lane eh?!

Well indeed, I try to remind myself that at least people are in the pool and that's better than no physical activity at all! I just wish they'd do it in the slow lane...

I don't generate many bubbles but I do confine myself to the slow lane ![]() |
