Hold on Hendo, there is no need to get the manual out. Let's not get drastic now. Can't we all just agree to press buttons until someone works out WTF is going on as normal??

Hendo my 305 also decided to play silly buggers when I told it to Do Course. Let me complete a 2 mile run and then lost all the info becuase it classed the run as a warm up even though it is a route I do all the time. Very annoying.

Okay so tried the courses thing again today. Planned a route on Fetch, transferred to Garmin.
It was a sort of out and back route with a loop at the bottom and a bit of a loop at the top end - not quite a figure of 8 more a figure of eeeeeeeiiiight.
Anyway, got to the starting point, selected the course, pressed start, and after 100 yards it had decided I'd done a mile already, and was telling me to go the wrong way. So I canceled it and just ran.
Luckily we'd photocopied a map too - this was far more useful. I wonder if entering a series of waypoints would be more useful, to navigate between them. Bit fiddly on the run perhaps.
One feature I did find useful was turning the map on, and on the last couple of miles being reassured that we were heading in the right direction to get back to the starting point, and how far away it was, roughly.
Until someone has a solution I have officially given up on courses!

Still playing with this and getting somewhere, including sorting out the differences between routes and courses. Just need the time to go out and run and test the ideas I have.
Did you press start or 'do course'?
Did it ever tell you that you were off or on course?

I only tend to use the courses feature when out on the bike and I must admit they take a bit of getting used to. I plot my courses on Memory Map and then transfer them to the Garmin (at this point I should mention it's not the FR 305 that I use when biking). I've found in the past you have to plot them carefully and fairly accurately i.e. following every part of the road\track etc precisely oh and the starting location, the number of times it tells me I've got 100ft to travel to the start of the course! Even then on occasions (like today) it tells me I've gone off course when clearly I haven't. Never tried plotting them on the Fetch map thingy.
The other thing I've found if you use the compass type view on the Garmin is when to actually follow the compass. The compass can swing round well in advance so it takes a bit of getting used to. The first few times I took it on face value and ended up going down down a cul-de-sac and on another occasion down someones drive!
The one thing I can't get used to is the bloomin' virtual partner, I'm sure he's being sneaky and taking shortcuts.
Hendo - could you not create a course from today's run based on the Gamin data for future use? Obviously this isn't going to help if your planning on running a brand new route.
Flanker - be interesting to see what you come up with. I'm sure I'm not using it to it's full potential.

Phil - if you are using an etrex, the whole courses/nav thing works so much better. I have run with both before to be on the safe side when in the middle of nowhere (305 for timing etc and etrex for nav backup).
another, maybe obvious, point is that a GPS has no idea of direction when you are stationary and until you have been running for a few yards the compass thingy is meaningless.

"do course", then "start"
the only thing I gave it chance to do was to say I'd done a mile already after 100 yards, then I reset it all and started the run again without the course option!

Flanker - I pressed "do course", and then started the timer. It didn't really have chance to tell me I was on or off course because it thought i'd done a mile by the time I'd run 100 yards! I reset the run ans started from scratch with no course option.
Phil - yes could use the data next time, but next time I'll know where I'm going!
