Gang, it's my first big race for five years in a couple of weeks. Bricking it slightly, and I have forgotten what to do.

Yep to the city tour bus - save your legs and see the sights. Also my last lesson learnt from a foreign race - take some safety pins with you, just in case you forget to find some at the expo when you collect your number

Essential Berlin travel tip: download the BVG FahrInfo mobile app if you have the right kind of device.

It gives you reliable live travel info for the underground, the S-Bahn and the buses, all of which are really well integrated in Berlin. You can put in your start point and desired end point and it will spew out all the alternative routes and real-time timetables. Utterly brilliant.

(On a related topic, and I can't remember what the options are, research and buy some multi-trip/multi-day/multi-person public transport tickets.)

Ah, a friend mentioned that app so I downloaded it just yesterday! Good to see another vote of confidence in it. And safety pins now added to the packing list!

Excellent! There are various landing points and the popular tourist trips cover the stretch between the Nikolaiviertel at the eastern end and the Chancellery buildings (Kanzleramt) at the western end. There are a lot of interesting buildings visible from the river between these points and it's a good way of orienting yourselves. You can break the journey too if want to stop somewhere and get back on board the next boat.
