I guess it makes sense for Mercedes in a couple of ways. Not only do they get a fast driver, but they remove the only driver that can actually score points in the red bull.
It would be ruthless to do that to George though. They already had him for too long in Williams, and right now he's doing a decent job. Mercedes have a really solid, dependable pair of drivers right now.
I am a Mercedes fan, but I think that would push me to Mclaren or Williams.

On paper Max (fastest driver currently) plus Antonelli (fastest future driver in Toto's mind) is a no brainer for any team to want if they think they can manage the turbulence and attitude that Max is likely to bring.
As for Russell, he's objectively less good than Max and there's no room for sentiment. Whether Toto thinks Russell is less good than Antonelli is the key question, but it's pretty obvious that Max and George couldn't be in the same team given some of their recent off track disagreements.

I don't think it would be a personality thing for Russell with Verstappen in same team. I think Russell would resent being number 2 driver in a team that he was number 2 to Hamilton for so long and has just recently become number 1.
And number 2 to Verstappen feels like a real backward step for him, surely - because a. Verstappen seems to demand car set up or design that doesn't suit other drivers (his number 2s always seem disadvantaged?) and b. because Verstappen is his peer, unlike Hamilton, where he was clearly the new, young driver coming into a team with a long established world championship winner.
I don't think Russell would want to stay.
Surely Mercedes should spend their money on a car designer, not a driver. I don't think Verstappen in a Mercedes would be winning races today. But Russell in a better performing car could be? G

Mercedes have never done a no 1/ no 2 thing. The road decides.

That's the point; in a team like Merc where they broadly follow the McLaren approach of "let them race" without a defined #1 and #2 (even if recent history does suggest they do in fact end up with an informal team hierarchy primarily based on experience) you can't put drivers like Max and George in the same team with existing personality clashes because that sharing of data, red mist, general distrust of each other would become a real issue.
They've managed it "ok" in the past I suppose with Lewis and Nico, though it wasn't always pretty. Max would ramp that up to another level though I think, or at least that's my completely external media-led impression.
I might be wrong, he could be a brilliant teammate with a fast driver alongside him. I don't think so though, especially once his entourage comes along to prod things (yes, Jos, I'm thinking of you!).

Piastri is flying compared to Norris. Unlucky for him losing that 15s due to SC.
