Back for its third annual outing: the official Anti Lent thread. Oh alright, let's not be antagonistic, the alternative Lent thread.
Giving up things is soul destroying, self denial so negative, hair shirts so Not-Me, darlings. Spring is about new beginnings and reawakenings - let's celebrate that instead.
All you have to do is find, see, hear, start, (or even re-start) a new thing. Every day would be cool but isn't vita l- it doesn't have to be a big project every day Seeing the first swallow or other birdie, changing your usual seat on the bus/train or sofa/dining table, spotting a plant coming into bud or bloom, trying a new food or sandwich, running down a different street, going into a shop, a gallery, a cinema.... anything you haven't done before or if you have it was too long ago to count.
BIG new things are also brilliant and welcomed. Newt Jinglers (I'll explain that later) have taken up musical instruments, started archery, learned to touch type, practiced saying no (that's BIG), planned and produced gardens, had radical haircuts... the possibilities are endless.
We officially start tomorrow on Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, and finish on Easter day. A new thing isn't just for Easter but it's good to have a finite time scale for the thread.
Every day a favourite new thing is chosen - I get the first pick to avoid argument - and from then on the chosen becomes the chooser.
That'll do for starters.
Get planning, and get jingling.
Laters, spring sunbeams!

We have started a bit early in this household. As of this week BaronBR is taking a packed lunch to work instead of going to the supermarket and I have made my first appearance on the Fetcheveryone podcast (it might be my first appearance on any podcast actually!)
I am also going to give up something though - which I don't normally do at Lent but will give it a go this year.

Sounds good, Baroness (as do you!)
I occasionally grant a special dispensation for giving something up, especially if you can re-word the denial/stopping in a life affirming way - or if the giving up is replaced by something better ...such as improved health or quality of life. (Ooh, very goody goody)

OK - I am going to name and shame myself here then. I am going to give up playing candy crush for Lent because I waste so much time when I could be doing something more useful (like following this thread or reading blogs or even writing the occasional blog or even........ working). There I've said it now - and maybe I will even give it up for good once I break it as a habit....

Okes - THIS is what you are doing: making better, ie more fun, more interesting, more restful - even more useful at a pinch - use of the time you previously spent on playing candy crush.
There you go! Easy. xxx
