No cycling for months Sharkie! However I have just yesterday agreed to join a parkrun friend's 'beginners road biking' training group - he's doing a bike trainer course or something - and he is going to teach us things like riding in a group, drinking while riding etc etc, which will be good. And another couple of women, also from parkrun, have got themselves smart new road bikes for Christmas and we've agreed we would make a good (ie not intimidating) little group for decent road trips when the weather's suitable. I hope that this will finally be the year I learn to love not only hills but cycling too.

By the way I bet you would be very good at sprint hills. Very different from the long slow inclines many distance runners call hill training (valid in a different way of course).

Sprint hills? Shortish but sharpish? I can do those less than 50m from my front door - but how short and how sharp do they need to be, Sharkie?

50 metres is more than enough.

Try 2 sets of 5, really power up with good form - use your arms and really pick your feet up. Walk back down slowly-ish. Take four or five minutes walk or jog between.

See how they feel.

If they're properly steep I do hills as short as 20- 30 metres. It's good to get a variety of distances.

Not running again until I get my antibiotics from the doc. She seemed to think the test results would be through today so she can give me the right ones. I hope so - very fed up of feeling yuk and I have hills to run up!

How's everyone doing?

I knew the last ten days would be a lower hill score for me. I was in mainly flat London rather than hilly Hastings, and I only logged about half the amount of climbing.

Still, it's not too bad - I'm now on 2407 metres of climbing by foot only. I'm hoping to reach 4,000 by the end of the month, there will be lots of hills this week. How does 'climb a 10k in ten weeks' sound?

Crikey Sharks you put me to shame! I went out this morning specifically to bag some upward metres. Four miles distance and 187m of ascent, which I was quite pleased with til I read your post!

The Y-axis botherers of 2017 :)

Running or cycling or (somehow!) swimming uphill in 2017. Monkey people with the ropes and whatnot also very welcome.

Customised targets are the way to go here, depending on fitness and targets and geography and mode of propulsion. Good luck all :)
