Not sure if it's a good or bad thing but I can actually remember when beer in Keswick was ten bob a pint!

We came down the fence line from the summit of Calva but when we got to the bottom we could see the line up to mungrisdale but to get to it we needed to decide left or right , we chose right then cut across the heather once we were up on the common we could look back and see we should have gone left over the bridge ..... next time , that's what reccies see for eh

That's not far off gromet - down the fence line, through the gate, follow the trod (watching out for bears) cross the river, then settle in for one of the dullest walks in lakeland to the summit of blencathra

It's certainly my least favourite way up Blencathra.

Very embarrassed. It's the only way I've summited Blencathra.

V'Rap, I can't explain it! Along with St. Sunday Crag it's my least visited 'big' summit.

I did the "direct" line off Great Calva on my first BGR attempt and agree with FF, it's too overgrown and rutted to be of any advantage. My companions on that night were two guys well over six feet tool and one small (but exceptional) female fellrunner. The tall guys were OK, but we both suffered in the deep heather.
I actually like a diagonal line straight off the summit (hop over the fence), joining the fence line and then through the gate before you reach Wiley Gill. There's a nice corner you can cut there through a little crag that brings you out just in front of the sheepfold.
