I seem to recall from a previous outing a few years ago that hacking through the heather at the foot of Great Calva is a genuine feature of the route, though we wondered in retrospect if we should have turned left over the little footbridge.
I've been well exfoliated, and am enduringly grateful for the ability to take three consecutive paces without tripping over something or falling down a soggy hole.

Drop back down the way you came up to the summit of Calva and set a bearing for where you want to start traversing across the blue scree under Blencathra. Then mountain marathon it. You *should* pass the huge cairn (about the size of a wok ;-)) of Mungrisedale common on your right. The trudge up from the Caldew is a BG special. It's not in '50 Lakeland rambles to do before you die'
Someone will come on and say go on and left from Calva summit then follow the fence down. Don't. It's rubbish. Longer steeper and wetter

It was Hall's Fell Ridge we came down. Definitely better as a route of ascent than descent, but we needed a bit of downscrambling to exercise those last few remaining upper body muscles

And way way quicker DT. The direct route has got progressively slower in recent years. You used to be able to find a decent line down but not anymore. The last time I looked at comparing the relative timings (about a year ago) the difference was appreciable. I wouldn't go near the direct line on a BG these days.
