Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Brownhills (Nr. Walsall - just to clarify)

The only place I know of where even McDonald's closed and left town. (Although I haven't researched that any further!)

Just had a few days visiting Cornwall for the first time. Thoroughly enjoyed my trip, but wasn't exactly struck by the beauty of St Austell town centre - not in a rush to revisit there..

How many can claim to have been the subject of a commercial? Does anyone remember the Chewits advert 'Even tastier than Barrow in Furness bus depot? Though, in fairness, they have improved it in recent years (ie. knocked it down..)

There is a blog about Brownhills brownhillsbob.com

I've not looked in for a while, but it is a good example of how somewhere which may be basically a bit crap is still home and a community and can have points of interest especially regarding social history.

A bit like where I am in fact: hmm, I can get up a couple of pictures of outstanding ugliness without a trip to Cumbernauld. Tbc.

I know about Brownhills Bob, and I agree with the community comment. I was born a few miles away in Norton Canes (now famous for the M6 Toll services), my Mum still lives there; the whole area has recovered from the decline of coal mining and rebuilt itself, and the folks are the salt of the earth.

But for all that, it's still a pretty ugly place!

Sigh, McDonalds also vacated Worksop Town centre. Whilst the town is surrounded by some beautiful forests the town centre is spectularly awful.

Blimey, there's a flashback! I used to work in Retford ('95-'98) and would drive around Worksop each way - don't think I ever went into the town, but sounds like I didn't miss much.

Got my first banjo from Doncaster, wasn't the prettiest, but nearest place that sold good banjos at the time.
