A combination of life, laziness and a sore shoulder has seen me lose the habit a bit this month, but I’m going to get back on the case starting today.

Welcome back!
In which case, I'd better state now (before you overtake me), that I have never before been in the top half of any league table, and the fact that I am very nearly in the top 20 for press-ups, of all things, is almost ludicrous, if I weren't so proud of it.

Well, I have just realised what a state my upper body strength is in!! Eldest son has just shown me how he has to do his press ups for his marine intake... suffice to say that my old wide-armed approach doesn't pass muster. Anyway, I've made a start.

Oh. My. Good. Lord. Just as well there were no witnesses to this...
I just tried an old fashioned sit-up. You know, the sort where nobody is on your feet and they are not tucked under the end of the bed so all the effort is yours alone. I failed at 16 regular sit ups. SIXTEEN. I am so ashamed. I used to bang these out in their hundreds at circuits.

16 is about the most I can manage Oscar, I’m beginning to think that the key to happiness as we get older is to forget what we used to be able to do

Definitely what Dave says - I currently can't run a mile at the pace I ran a marathon 12 years ago and for a while that really got to me and destroyed my enjoyment of running. I've managed to ignore that and am regaining my enjoyment.

I’d settle for just being able to run a mile at all without something snapping, pinging, or otherwise breaking.
The thing with all of these “strength” movements is that unless you do them you’re not going to find them easy. 16 straight off the bat is pretty good I’d say. But doing a couple of sets of 10 for a week or 2 then trying a max again might give you some progress to smile about.

I thought the "classic" situp was now frowned upon, for supposedly being bad for the back?
