I like Wriggler's pavement lanes idea.
I'd extend it further - it could apply in many other cases. EG in shops there should be tills for people who want to simply pay, and others who want to spend a few minutes dithering, having a general chat, fumbling about for 15 minutes trying to find a store card or a money off voucher they suddenly remembered they had when at the till (and not before) etc....as well as paying.

ah yes, well, don't start me on shops. However I like a chat with my local buthcer, veggir person baker etc, so long as there is no queue.
TRO is correct, the very worst are people who go into a shop, BUY something, then ask or get told how much it is, THEN AND ONLY THEN, they fiddle about in their bags/wallet/purse/pockets whatev, for some money/cards....you are in a shop, you decided to go into a shop, you decided to buy something, have some knowledge of where your money is before you go in.

the problem with pavement lanes is that all the f*ckwits will be dawdling down the middle one!

We'd need insurance in case of collisions, or damaged provender.

Nothing wrong with contactless for under a fiver, I do it frequently, it's the quickest way!

Perhaps a third pavement lane for those too busy scrolling through their phones to look where they are going. This lane should be two way, so they can smash into each other as much as they please without a risk to the either us normal folk, or the ditherers in the other 2 lanes.
(with a further provisio that any hospital treatments from such collisions must be paid for, so it's not a drain on the NHS).

I have never used contactless. I think I was the last person in the world to use a PIN, I insisted on signing right up to the last day, then panicked because I didn't know what my PIN was. #Luddite
