Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

They are towns. Yes I agree that once upon a time they were villages but as London grew they were swallowed up. So they are now towns in my book....!

How about “shopping villages” :)

I was quite amused when I moved to Birmingham and found that the individual suburbs called themselves "villages".

The town where I live has a population of around 3,000. It has two churches, two rugby clubs (one of each), a primary and a secondary school, a Co-op, a Spar and a couple of factories. It's definitely not a village.

The Village of Kidlington a few miles from where I live had a population of over 13,000 in the 2011 census.

I live in the town of Stone, and its' population is circa 17-20k. Oulton is a nearby village, that has a population of about 600. They feel like the right proportions.

[Whilst surveying old houses in the West Riding, I found the terms 'township' and 'parish' (ecclesiastical) useful for pinpointing locations. Neither gave any indication of size of population by themselves.]

Imagine how many it would have been before Inspector Morse?

Frome rhymes with broom not home.

I'm just about over the cream tea debate yesterday too.

No, it grinds my gears that reporters can't pronounce it. Linked to Macca's secret gig last night
