Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

We were just talking about Les Miserables at home. I quite fancy seeing the film, and I never watch films. But what grinds my gears is that the novel (the two-volume Penguin Classics edition) was my big secret love when I was a teenager, and now everyone thinks they KNOW the story from listening to the CD of the musical and seeing photos of Anne Hathaway (wasn't she married to someone famous a few centuries ago?) looking skinny, without ploughing through all that stuff about the early life of the Bishop and the construction of the Paris sewers.

I must be the only other person who's read the book. It's a fair bit grimmer than the stage version - particularly Fantine's story.

Drivers waiting at intersections / lights who don't indicate until the lights change and/or they are on top of the intersection. FFS why can't you indicate as you approach, even if the light is red. That lets cyclists and pedestrians and other road users approaching the intersection behind you know what you're doing in advance... the whole fucking point of indicators.

Dear gym user,

You are allowed to leave your I Phone in the locker. Honestly, you can. It won't self destruct, and neither will you. Indeed leaving it there is a win-win: you'll be able to finish the same workout in about half the time, and THEN afterwards they'll be 45 mins of unanswered messages to check!

Go on, give it a try....

My new job, thanks for waiting until I have been there over three months to tell me I can't take holiday during the Easter and summer school holidays you ******* thoughtless ****s, that would be something to mention prior to the job offer. Back to the last *** job that I totally hated then.

As a knock-on effect I got to swear at someone performing another gear grinding action (queing in traffic stradling the pedestrian crossing), I felt a bit better afterwards.
