A friend of mine always used to say that the Pizza Express gigantic pepper grinders were very phallic, which was even more off-putting! And now they all do it with Parmesan and chilli oil and god knows what else, when they've already stuffed your food up by putting far too much pesto on or whatever...

It's also the aggressive way they offer extras, there's always implicit criticism when you say no. Like 'ooh, you're too good for our freshly ground black pepper?' Plus I just want the waiter to fuck off after they've left the food. Bustling interfering service is nearly as bad as neglectful having to rugby tackle staff to the ground service in my book.
