Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

This extract from the local paper really ground my gears

"An assistant chef who smashed a schoolboy’s jaw in two places in a vicious unprovoked attack has been spared jail.

He claimed he thought the victim had been bullying a boy.

James hit the 16-year-old victim repeatedly, leaving him needing a jaw splint and unable to eat solid food.

...the victim had been walking home from school with two friends when he was confronted. James let his dog loose, which intimidated the teenager.

That grinds my gears because of the way it is written. Is it just me, or does it take quite a lot of work to interpret who is "a schoolboy," "he," "the victim," "a boy" and "the teenager?"

I think I understand what the article is trying to say, but it could be written more clearly.

Oh - and what also grinds my gears is people saying "could I get ..." when what they mean is "please can I have ..."

I say "I am going to the coffee shop. Would like like something?" and they reply "could I get a coffee?"

Makes me want to say: "well I was going to get it, but if you want to get it maybe you could get me one while you about it." Except that is needlessly pedantic because I understand exactly what they mean.

And while I am on the pedantic step - people who say "I am waiting on ...." instead of "I am waiting for ..."

"I am waiting on a cream cake." How bloody ridiculous is that?

"I haven't got a pen"

later - why have you done no work?
"I asked you for a pen and you never gave me one"

Where to start... grrr...

"No, you're alright" meaning "No, I don't want what you're offering" as in

"coffee?" "no, you're alright"

I KNOW I'm alright. I didn't feel under any obligation, in particular, I was just offering to do you a FAVOUR.

Passport application forms. If I already have a passport and just want to renew it, why can't new photo's be enough ? I'm still me, the same person I was when I got my passport 10 years ago ffs.
