One glove, two gloves ~ two gives you the plural, so why not say a pair of glove? Trousers are two trouser legs ~ again the two legs gives it the plural ... So surely a PAIR of trousers is four trouser legs and taking a pair of gloves with you means you have two to wear and two to spare?
