Hills of Death (HOD)
Great Northern Rail I have a 1522 from Kings Cross (and a 1535 if you really want to spend a long time on a train) the next train is 1640 !!!
I left early yesterday to get the 1522 cancelled everyone goes for 1535 FOUR CARRIDGES. No Fcking chance.

Yep - the HS2 thingy will just mean more commutes into London from a much wider area. The whole good transport links = better economy is a red herring. Most of the north already has pretty good transport links but is dying on its arse. I personally would like to see much more decentralisation of big private companies and public bodies away from London eg. HSBC moving headquarters to Birmingham.

[Did you know Barclays is one of the biggest employers in Dorset? They have a massive processing centre in Poole where a lot of back office and HR stuff is done. It's IT is run out of Knutsford. Barclaycard is Northampton's biggest employer. Citibank has a major IT centre in Belfast. So there is a bit of spread away from that London]

'The World's Local Bank' - HSBC closing so many of it's branches and threatening to move it's HQ out of the UK. I used to be an employee and have worked in numerous offices most of which have shut down.
To do any banking, I have to go online and to pay cheques in either have to use a machine by going into a branch miles from home and queuing up at their business till. Nothing to do with not enough customers using the facilities, just pure greed by the directors.

I would think the Manchester Sheffield link could do with a bit of work. In fact Ithink HS2 should be worked from the North southwards and is a little cock-eyed to think it won't have an impact. If you go back in time and look at the economic effect the railways initially had, I think there is a case for it.
I have a problem with the phrase Northern Powerhouse, but not the idea that there should be some sort of policy of investing more in the North (or the rest of the Uk) as opposed to London. Having been born in London and lived there until I was 30, and having lived outside London for 20 odd years, I know London gets more than it's fair share.

People are all worked up about the "business case" (including people who've never been interested in economics in their life), but the simple truth is that the main long distance lines in and out of London are full to bursting at peak times, meaning (a) crotch-wateringly high fares and (b) too many cars and lorries on our motorways. Given that we've already spunked billions just on the West Coast Main Line for very little return, "upgrading the existing network" just wouldn't give you all that much for billions of pounds.
It does seem to me that the reason people are upset about this particular large sum of money being spent is that while nuclear power stations and submarines, aircraft carriers, fighter planes, sewers, power grids and everything else happen out of sight and out of mind, this is going to be "obliterating" the countryside.

Oh, and the "start it from the north" idea sounds good in practice, but since it's the London to Rugby section that's the most overcrowded, doing it that way round wouldn't help matters.
