Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

Asking for a friend:

Has anyone ever had loss of vision whilst out running?
A friend (male, about 45, general good health, average weight) was on an easy run yesterday and after about 10 minutes got a 'bright light in both his eyes' which faded again after about 20 minutes. He could see it with eyes open or closed and otherwise says he felt OK.

Obviously I've told him to get straight down the Doctors but I wondered if anyone here had come across this before?

I've heard of dodgy vision at the end of a long run or after a really hard intervals session but never during a slow easy run.

I'm not medical, but had this once after a very hard run. Could it be retinal migraine?

Agree that he should talk to his gp though.

I get migraine aura (sparkly zigzags in my case) but no headache. Can't remember if I've ever had it while running but it comes on fairly randomly so I might have.

Yes, seems like an exercise induced visual migraine, but he needs to get his blood pressure checked at his GP and also visit an optician to have an eyesight test.

I'd agree best to go to the optician too. Flashes can be signs of retinal detachment - not likely if in both eyes, but best to get checked for peace of mind.

Thanks everyone :-)
Didn't think of the optician. I'll let him know.

I've had the occasional dizzy / tunnel vision feeling when running alongside the canal, or when the sun is strobing through tree cover. I've never had it elsewhere, so I just avoid the canal when it's bright sunshine, or run with sunglasses.

Not quite the same - but may be worth looking at the conditions that brought it about.
