Well, BB, do you think they are an essential thing for an athlete of whatever pursuasion?
I don't take any supplements and tend to go for fairly home made approaches to my energy intake at fell races and the like, while having a very good diet generally. So I am well fed and well hydrated all the time. Do you think there is a need for these things then? As I can't see it...

Protein powders etc have a place for recovery and meal replacement sometimes.
Depends how you use them

Ok, meal replacement, as in when you cannot eat because you are running an ultra or something like that?
I just have a balanced meal after a race, rather than a protein drink, and I don't do protein drinks during exercise either. I have to say that so far about 98% of energy products I have tried have simply made me sick or have given me the runs... so I prefer natural products and just good meals and drinks.

This has come up because my cycling coach thinks I don't eat and drink enough on the bike... so far I have been out with him for an hour and for 2.5 hours. OK, I put in a reasonable effort, but not full out hard. For the first ride I needed nothing, on the second ride I had one honeystinger gel and half a bottle of Taut energy drink with added salt... I performed fine, I did not bonk, so why should I take food supplements?

My tuppence re "ont he job" supplements is that I think most of us (with appropriate conditioning) can get through long runs or whatever endurance training on just fluids, but in the context of a training regime then the issue isn't getting through it, but how we recover, ready for the next session.
If I don't sip fluid every mile, and take gels on long runs, I am fine, but sore the next day. If I do do that (doodoo, lol), then I recover much quicker.
Nuun is very good as a non-carb rehydrating whatnot.
