Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

It's sometimes amusing having subtitles on with things like the news (or live TV...)

Netflix:
MT is used for some languages with human QC. If it's an original or they bought content without subs.

However.... if Netflix buy a show with subtitles, they don't check them or change them. It's likely that's what happened.

MT probably not used yet for Welsh as MT for Welsh is still rubbish afaik.

Today's vegetarian lunch at a conference venue in Germany was "planted chicken", tasted nice, not sure where they planted it though!

Translated menus do seem to be a good source of mistranslations but that one is particularly brilliant Larkim!

LindsD: I fear that our trade is a dying one under the influence of AI and machine translation. Certainly it's getting harder all the while to make a living from fluency in a foreign language. I work mostly from audiovisual these days.

Sweetie Long story but briefly: I learned Russian in the military many years ago and then went on to uni and other things. Did Polish too but that's largely fallen by the wayside now.

That's interesting, Muttley. That's my background, too.

About This Thread

Following LindsDs excellent blog about the complexity of translation it starting me thinking about some of the worst mistranslations I have come across over the years. I often use Spanish subtitles when watching English TV programs and I guess these are bashed out quite quickly because some of those translations can be waaaay off!:
An episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine where one character asked “Is that your take away?” (i.e. is that what you understand from this) and the translation was “Is ...
