fetch - i'll see what i can find out Re - chips but it may take a few days. I'm guessing we probably have race directors in our midst who already know who is best to use? based on cost and numbers.
I mentioned the numbers as my clubs biggest race had 600 finishers last year and we were beginning to struggle using a paper timing system. But it was a 10K where people are finishing in a fairly short time window.

Until the race directors come forward, I'm happy for you guys to do some research, and report back (I've had some other folk volunteer to find chip prices - but the more the merrier)- then we can put it all together and get the best system. Yes, 500 is a wet-finger-in-the-wind figure - lets use it for now.

Useful article on organising an event. A big item missing from the list is Insurance, £10 million quoted in article.

if it is not a measured route or official distance then chips would not be needed, would they?

Good point, BW, I guess it comes down to whether we want it to be an official distance, whether that will appeal to people....my gut feeling is people will want to do this because it's such a great reason to do it....but will it have widerappeal if it's official.

I was thinking about asking the race organiser at my club about official measuring...he does that too, I think. :-)

Katie, I think a lot of people on fetch will do it regardless but others that do not really know Mick n Phil will prob be interested in it being a measured distance and if there is PB potential that will attract more.

i think that we should do cross country with lots of stiles, make mick n phil work for the money.;-)

it might be worth looking for an old airfield, the grounds of a country house or a large park. maybe a good cycle track. i know they used to do cycle races on airfields, maybe worth contacting cycle clubs for ideas.
