Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch
or for an ad-free Fetcheveryone experience!

So UKIP....

It's not banned (but I think you know that). It's not very necessary though, is it? I'm sure you can understand why many of those who might be labelled with it could prefer 'actor' instead.

Interesting and unusual (istm) that the masculine form of the word is preferred.

In Germany the "feminist" way is to refer e.g. to firefighteresses and firefighters, rather than to make the masculine form of the word include the feminine, which historically, it did.

I think that Actor was seen as gender neutral, rather than actress which definitely has connotations.

It's the same as Police Officer is better than Policeman or Policewoman. Or Firefighter etc...

I don't get the actor / actress distinction myself but I guess if the ladies feel that strongly they can always pass on the Academy award!

No, PTB it's not banned, and of course I exaggerated to make a point.

I still think it represents the thin end of the Thought Police wedge.

My wife is a Professor. At a recent event we were announced as "Professor and Mrs Running"

I'm just wondering - in the interests of equality - which of us should take the most offence?

Interesting article (apologies for the extreme hard left bias - a fozzy trademark line I believe) commenting that social media just means you hear the noise and feedback from people with the same views. Certainly I think that's true with reference to the election campaig

Started off well, with some interesting points, which I tend to agree with. Ended up with the usual load of platitudes that no-one could disagree with - except for the means by which the described perfect world is achieved.

I do have quite a few FB buddies who use it as an all purpose soapbox for worthy chest-beating, and I do often wonder how many of them actually do things as opposed to simply posting links on FB which have the happy secondary effect of telling the world how great they are.
